The Nears is one of the most accessible and historic climbing areas at the Gunks, located just south of the Trapps along the same escarpment. Officially known as the "Near Trapps," the area earned its nickname because it lies nearer to the road than the longer cliff band of the Trapps proper. A short walk from the West Trapps parking lot leads you directly to its base, making it a favorite for climbers looking for a quick approach and a concentrated selection of quality routes. The Nears are known for their steep, gear-protected trad lines with an old-school character. Many of the climbs are striking and direct, following clean cracks, corners, and roofs through bulletproof quartz conglomerate. Iconic routes like Yellow Belly (5.11c), To Be or Not To Be (5.9), and the intimidating Nosedive (5.10b) showcase the bold, technical, and physical nature of climbing here. Protection can range from plentiful to sparse, so good judgment and solid gear placement skills are essential. Despite being slightly shorter than the Trapps, the Nears pack in a ton of variety and adventure. Climbers will find everything from single-pitch testpieces to multi-pitch classics with dramatic exposure. The cliff sees a mix of sun and shade throughout the day, and its proximity to the parking lot makes it a great option for afternoon cragging or beating the crowds. For those seeking traditional climbing in a concentrated, approachable setting, the Nears offer some of the best the Gunks has to offer.

About The Next Ascent Guidebook App

The Next Ascent app guide is the most comprehensive, authored and non user-generated guidebook available to climbing areas. Local authors, guides, and local experts create our guidebook apps from decades of experience and craft a user-friendly package for use on mobile devices. The Next Ascent App is a detailed crag and bouldering app with route information covering individual crags, or groups of crag sectors, which correspond with our print guidebooks.

Our app works completely offline including maps. Guides can be downloaded and stored on your device, so you don't need a signal to be able to read the descriptions and see the topos and maps.
